A bit about myself. I'm a 50+ year old former competitive swimmer and I've decided it's time to work on preventing osteroporosis as well as other maladies of aging. I've had bad joints since birth and the cracking and popping has been in my memories starting around age 9 or 10. I've been walking up to 5 times a week, anywhere from 1.5 to 6.5 miles, for the past 5 years. Things kind of fell apart after getting back down to my college weight mostly due to not having a goal to work toward. Now I've started to add weights in the hopes to keep improving my health and fitness, I also enjoy knitting and watching Asian television shows.

Today's Accountability:
Day 8 of Stacked
Walking: day off (Sundays and Tuesdays)
Nutrition yesterday: Not great, over did the snacking and basically skipped dinner.

Goals:
Keep excess weight off
Strengthen joints, mainly shoulders, knees, and wrists (who would have ever thought that there are such things as knitting injuries?)
Find an activity/challenge (fun run/obstacle challenge/etc.) to work toward completing

Thank you all for the welcome!

Over the past week I've noticed that my walking speed has decreased, not greatly but enough that I'm fairly certain it's due to yhe added activity. I guess that's something to work back to. I finished off a cowl I've been knitting to add to my winter gear stash. Not sure what will be going on the needles next.

Today's Accountability:
Day 9 of Stacked
Walking: 2.41 miles pace 18.23/mi
Nutrition yesterday: Not as bad as the day before. We had a movie day so there were snacks involved but I got all 3 meals in with appropriate portions.

Yesterday I did not want to walk so Im proud that I actually went. Over the years I've realized that I'm really self-conscious when doing weight workouts so my preference is to exercise when nobody else is around. This morning hubs was still awake and while exercising I had another realization. I don't mind if someone else is around, but any chit chat needs to be non-workout related. Anything remotely adjacent to teasing makes me want to stop. I may have been a little short with hubs this morning. I'll have to make it up to him later.

Today's Accountability:
Day 10 of Stacked
Walking: day off
Nutrition yesterday: pretty good, all 3 meals, snacks are almost gone from the house again. Trying a new recipe tonight if I can remember to get it going early enough. It's a slow cooker birria recipe my oldest sent me. Do you know how hard it is to find Guajillo chiles? I went to 4 stores, 3 of which I looked online first and they ended up not having them Of course the 4th store I went to on a prayer and there they were. I should have gone there in the first place. It's even the closest to home.

Goals:
Keep excess weight off: down 1 lb from last week
Strengthen joints, mainly shoulders, knees, wrists: found the rehab programs yesterday so I'll start incorporating them into my rotation
Find an activity/challenge to work toward completing: new goal, flexibility. I would like to be able to touch the floor straight legged again.

Yeah, not happening today. I tried to do day 12 of stacked but the knees said nope on the second reverse lunge. My hips started complaining too when I put my shoes on to go for a walk. Honestly I would like to go back to bed and sleep, but my nemesis Caffeine is preventing that from happening.

Today's Accountability:
Stacked on hold for today
Walking: nope
Nutrition yesterday: Good

Goals:
Weight: next check 5 days
Rehab: Wrists at least it's something
Flexibility:nope, but maybe I'll try to get some in during a work break. - nope didn't happen. A "simple double check" turned into "yeah, no this is going to take a couple days if you want it done right"

Yesterday was fun. If fun is having your work load expand from a few hours to a few days. Gotta love it when the client downplays the scope of work. Yesterday also exploded the schedule this morning. Fridays mornings are my grocery delivery mornings. All good, I managed to sneak getting my order in on time, Then maybe 30 minutes later my medically interesting offspring tells me their appointment has been moved up and they need to get labs done this morning. So, now I have to get the kid to the lab and back before my groceries arrive and still get to work on time to discuss yesterday's debacle.

Today's Accountability:
Stacked day 12 - couldn't finish the last 2 sets of the lunges. Knees said Not today. Soreness = good, Pain = BAD,
Walking: the plan is to walk the parking lot at the lab while the kid is waiting
Nutrition yesterday: Hahahahahaha! Stress eating 2 cups of trail mix for "dinner" probably isn't a good thing

Goals:
Weight: next check 4 days
Rehab: if time permits
Flexibility: if time permits

Random thoughts: I did get some walking in yesterday at the lab. A little shy of 2 miles. Right around 18 min/mile. Little slow, but I attribute it to 2 things, walking in the parking lot without a totally connected sidewalk, and it was much colder walking outside a residential area. We made it back home in plenty of time for groceries to arrive. One of the best things I've purchased lately is a wagon that I take out to the shopper's car to load everything into. Shortens the time it takes to lug all the bags from the front door to the kitchen.

I think I need to upgrade Caffeine from nemesis to frenemy. Thanks to another infusion I was able to power through the largest portion of the work debacle. I didn't even smack anyone.

Got started on the first of five knitted Christmas stockings. Each will have a white base with a different contrast color (light and dark mini skeins). I'm sure it'll be fine, but I'm already feeling like I'm playing yarn chicken and will run out half way through.

Today's Accountability:
Stacked day 13 - only did 2 sets. my back was screaming. I so very much wanted to do nothing today.

Weight: next check 3 days
Rehab: Lower Back
Flexibility: I need to think about how I want to approach this.

Little late today.

Yesterday I took the day off from everything. My body did not want to cooperate and was throwing a tantrum so it was put in time-out. It was probably the best thing for me since I woke up this morning feeling pretty good. I had some really good insights while working out this morning about fixed schedules and set backs. Surprisingly I'm much better with these as I get older. It's easier for me to pick back up after going off schedule. Previously I tended toward rigid prefection, if I missed a day, well, that's it. Why bother finishing since I missed a day. I'm much kinder to myself now and, lik my birthday doughnuts, I refuse to feel bad about taking rest I need.

Yesterday was an ok day. Work debacle is slowly un-debacling. It's still a huge mess, but I believe that is inherent to the project itself. Medical appt went well though there will be more labs, every 2 weeks until the next appointment. I can honestly say I'm not surprised, Bubu (youngest) hasn't been great at remembering meds.

Hubs had a migraine yesterday, first one this bad in awhile. That meant comfort food for dinner, which meant fast food cheeseburgers. These days fast food is so different from even 5 years ago. Bubu still orders like a growing teenager, but hubs and I are very different. Typically I'll order one small, plain cheeseburger and split a medium fry with hubs. No drinks for me, I have water at home. We also used to order very often, but now are down to maybe once a month.

I'm approcimately 2/3 through the first Christmas stocking. Still a bit worried about yarn chicken but I'm not as anxious. You'd think after 7 years of knitting I'd have a better drip on how much yarn will be needed for a project. I think it's because, to me at least, yarn looks like a smaller amount than it actually is. Momo's (oldest) birthday present to me arrived yesterday, more pattern cards for my tiny collection.

Bad couple of days. I realized last night at dinner that I had missed 2 days of my morning meds.I had that A-ha! moment and realized that things weren't feeling right and the brain chemistry had been off. I wish I had the ability to tell earlier. Hopefully getting back on track will make things easier again. Two days shouldn't really matter, but it really does make a difference. This also explains why I NEEDED to have carrots with ranch dressing and buttered toast at 1:45 am. I am very much an eater when the chemistry is wonky,

Yesterday I skipped Stacked because I simply didn't have the time. I went to bed at the normal time, slept for an hour, then woke back up. I couldn't fall asleep again until 2:30. Was back up at 4:something.Told hubs that I'd go by the store to pick up something he needed and I decided to walk there since it's a bit over a mile away and I figured it would count as my walk. Then I decided to stop by the grocery as well. I don't know what possessed me to do that, but I lugged home 2 bags of groceries plus a gallon of milk. I guess that could count as a farmer's carry workout. By the time I got home it was time for work to start. At least that is finally smoothing out. Should be done with the Debacle by end of day today.

One good thing is that I also noticed that at some point I got a raise. A major part of my self-care routine is planning out my bills for the year. Nothing gives me peace of mind more than knowing all the bills can be, and will be, paid. At the end of December, each paycheck for the year is assigned bills. As the year goes along I mark off each bill as it gets posted to my account. Yesterday I saw an extra deposit from work that turned out to be back pay. Sweet!

I had a thought this morning that I'm not sure I'm doing the Stacked workouts correctly. For example: today's workout. each of the three exercises has a set count underneath. There is also the set counter with the timer. which I usually use to track rotations. There are 2 ways I see this working:
1) 1 set squats, rest, 1 set rows, rest, 1 farmer's carry, rest. Repeat 4 times. The set count underneath stating how many rotations to include the exercise.
or
2) 4 sets squats, rest, 4 sets rows, rest, 4 farmer's carry rest. Repeat 4 times.

Does this make any sense? Also, which way should it be interpreted? Am I overthinking (the answer is always yes)?

Hey, if I remember correctly it is nr 2! Do all the sets for a certain exercise and then move on to the next.

Approach nr 1 would be a circuit workout, then it would have a little bar up under the title saying "level 1: 3 sets level 2: 5 sets" or something like that. But then it usually also says "circuit" somewhere on the illustration or in the intro text.

When in doubt you can check the Instruction Manual 😊

The difference in a day is amazing when my meds balance me out. I spent way too many years surviving until, in 2021, I decided that I needed to put myself first for a change. It feels so good to feel good.

The Debacle is well and truly over at work. Thank goodness. There was a little bit of high drama afterwards, but it's all sorted and the stress has passed.

I finished Momo's stocking last night. I need to figure out how to block it because I don't think there are sock blockers that big. Maybe I'll try to convince hubs to shape a wire hanger for me. Next up is Momo's significant other's stocking. I need to wait for more yarn to arrive. I was kind of hoping that I could get 2 out of the base skein, but nope. The good news is that I won at yarn chicken, 28 cm left of one color and 99 cm of the other. Yay!

Feeling good again today. After reading the users manual yesterday I feel kind of unsmart. For example, instead of doing 4 sets one time around, I was doing 4 sets 4 times around. I think my joints will appreciate backing off a bit. I also think I need to adjust my meds a bit. One thing I like about my doctor is that he listens to me, says I know my body best and doesn't discount my input. We adjusted last month and things aren't quite at that sweet spot.

Added a package of mushrooms to dinner last night. Big adjustment, I only started eating mushrooms in the last 6 months.

Getting old really sucks sometimes. I had a whole thing written yesterday but forgot to hit post. Fun times. I moved up dumbbell size yesterday. It was quite a big jump since I don't have anything between 3s and 10s. I focused on smooth movements and not having jerky starts. I felt pretty good about it, and still felt good this morning. Until I didn't. I was doing fine with the 10s this morning, but on the first rack and hold my elbow felt like it was on the verge of popping. During the rest I moved it around and it felt fine. Second set; nope, that hurts. Put the 10s down and picked up the 3s, still hurt. Ugh. I get so tired of my joints being this way.

So I noticed that my Sunday post did, in fact, post. Some times the brain just doesn't want to fully engage.

Temps are going back up in the mornings. We're in that, not cold enough for a jacket, but not warm enough to go without, time of year. The bugs will be out soon and I really wish I could find some good breathable, anti-bug workout clothes.

The rest of my yarn for the Christmas stockings should be here by Friday. I've planned out N's stocking, each one will have patterns slightly personalized for each person. The hardest part is making sure they are all the same size.

You know what would be nice? Having something record my thoughts as I'm busy doing things and my brain keeps multitasking the whatever I'm doing and the 1,000 other things I'm thinking. Some days the CRS (Can't Remember Sh!t) is strong. But hey, I'm 54 and I'm allowed to forget what I was randomly thinking 30 minutes ago even if it was the funniest thing at the moment.

My yarn came yesterday and I got started on N's stocking. I'm so glad that the color matches as the new yarn is from a large company vs. an Indy dyer. The texture is a bit rougher, but honestly texture shouldn't really need to be a thing for this particular project. I also started making another dishcloth in the spirit of using up my cotton yarns.

I think I'm starting to see some progress. The slow gain of weight seems to have stalled and will hopefully start going back to where I feel most comfortable. A long time ago I always said that when I was 80 I'd sign up at an open swim meet and compete again (200 fly, 400 IM). I'd think about that over the years off and on and it finally feels like I could possibly be moving toward being able to do that someday. Granted I haven't been in a pool to work out in almost 30 years. It's always been weird to live my adult life in a place that doesn't have a city pool.

I've gotten a fair bit of N's stocking started. The picture isn't that great, but here you go. Hard to tell, but those are cakes on cake stands I'm working on. One thing I'll always be grateful for is my friend who said "I'll teach you," when I expressed my wish to know how to knit. I thought i'd be something I'd never be able to do.

Monday after working out, Stacked day 2 and Exercise of the day, I went straight to work. Nothing terribly new there. by the end of the work day my Achilles tendon on my left foot was burning. Fun. I RICE'd it up and took yesterday off completely. Beyond work (because it pays the bills) there was no exercise, no meal tracking, nothing. I didn't even really knit. I existed, I worked, I ate way too much sodium, I rabbit holed through youtube.

Speaking of knitting. UGH. I ripped out all my progress from Sunday. 22 rows of 3-color color work. No life line and I have a complicated relationship with picking up stitches. I didn't like how the pattern of that section turned out. Couldn't tell what it was beyond a vague blob. Now I'm trying to think of a way to up the contrast of my light blue yarn. I'm debating either frogging the whole thing and starting over with different yarn or duplicate stitching over the light blue with a metallic thread. I'm not quite sure. I also have to figure out what to replace those 22 rows with.

Y,all, I'm losing my mind. I bought a can of Mexican corn and I can't for the life of me remember which recipe called for it. I was thinking it was jambalaya but that doesn't fit. What was I going to make? It wasn't anything actually Mexican because I'm the only one who will eat anything besides tacos or fajitas.

I feel like I've been the stereotypical aging parent who only complains about their aches and pains, but here goes anyway. My Achilles is still giving me issues so I've been reluctant to do anything to exacerbate it further. Exercise of the day was interesting. My shoulder made lovely grinding sounds. That was new. Didn't hurt so I guess that's a plus.

It was, in fact, the jambalaya. At least that's what the meal plans suggest. Maybe I was feeling ambitious and thought I'd make it from scratch. Chili does sound good though it's been awhile since I made a batch.

Saturdays have been my long walk days that I haven't been doing lately. I think it's been 6 months or so. But today I sucked it up and did it. I wanted to turn back home a few times but kept going. I only skipped the last part of my planned route (weaving in and out of the streets in my subdivision) because my knees and back were starting to get uncomfortable.

Going to try a new thing for dinner tonight, a steak and mushroom calzone with garlic parmesan sauce. I've been debating making my own bread again, but this time I bought the dough at the store, it comes in a nice frozen chunk. The sauce I made myself. It's a family favorite. We'll see how it turns out. Not sure if Bubu will want the steak and mushroom or if we'll split the dough and do a separate one.

I had a random thought while walking this week. For some reason I had the urge to knit hats for the people I see walking at the same time I am as well as dog sweaters for the 2 pups I see as well. Is that weird? I think it's weird. I know I'm weird like that. I just like making things for people.

Ugh, yesterday's entry... Following the Amazon plan was a good decision I think. On rest days I do a stretching workout, which gives me progress on one of my original goals, better flexibility. I can tell I'm making progress overall. My legs aren't sore as long as they previously were after leg workouts. They would be sore for a couple of days and now it's down to mild discomfort for a day, nothing too bad. For awhile there I looked like a mondoshawan when walking down the stairs.

Work ebbs and flows, and boy is it flowing now. Let's just say that work-life balance isn't happening at the moment. Not that it's a bad thing. I've said before that I genuinely enjoy my job. I get caught up in it and don't realize the time. Yesterday I looked up and it was an hour past lunch, then I looked up again and it was a couple hours after quitting time. I don't mind when that happens because there are also times where time I am very not busy.

I'm a little over half way through N's stocking. I'm looking forward to filling them up and sending them off this winter.
