Ankle and Wrist Weights

I was looking at getting some wrist and ankle weights, mostly so that I can do the 'body armor' part of Hero's Journey.

I've read some mixed things and had some people IRL tell me to be extremely careful because using them can cause joint issues and can cause injuries.

Now I'm hesitant and wanted to see if anyone here has any insight. I'm assuming/hoping that using them as directed in the workouts on here will be fine?? I probably won't use them outside of darebee workouts, though, until I can get some more information about them.

Thank you, Hive!

I think the joint issues come from having them to loose so they wiggle around when you move.
I think some wrist weights have a thumb loop now to help combat that.
I would guess the other issue is adding to much weight to soon, like a too heavy dumbbell.

You can wrap your ankles and wrists with some towel, a rag etc. to prevent them to be too loose, and to avoid to be scratched.
Adjustable weights will let you carefully add weight.

I have some very light wrist weights that have a thumb hole to help keep them secure. My old ankle weights do tend to rub a little, regardless of how tight I tried to make them, but as @broli noted, you can wrap something around/under them. I've not had a problem with these weights. They're not so heavy - I don't suppose these sorts of weights ever really are. The only cautions I've ever heard about them as for running because they can potentially get you off-balance, but used in more controlled environments they shouldn't be any sort of problem. Like with any equipment, the thing to do when using them is simply to be mindful.

@astro_lizard ankle and wrist weights can indeed cause issues when used improperly. The improper part of their use comes from ballistic movements at high intensity that multiply exponentially the force felt by tendons as the angle of muscle and tendon to bone joint changes dynamically. Within Hero's Journey we've taken this into account and, of course, we expect you won't go overboard and strap on 6lbs weights when this is your first go at it. So, to recap, safe within Hero's Journey. Do not use for anything that is ballistic (i.e. kicking, jumping or running unless you're already experienced and know what you're doing). I hope this has answered your question.
