"..one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on.."
Yesterday was chaotic!
It began to snow around 10am and within an hour there were chain controls on the highways. Lots of vehicle spin outs and the highway was closed for several hours due to a big rig wreck. Needless to say, I cancelled my trip to Civilization. We closed school early and had students and staff go home while they still could. It was very hectic in the office trying to make sure all the students were either on the bus (and the parents knew they were arriving early) or getting picked up. Constant phone calls, parents coming in to pick students up, staff leaving early and the walkie talkie radios constantly going off created a cacophony which added to an already stressful situation. By the time I arrived home - which took much longer due to the weather - I was utterly exhausted and had a horrible headache. I basically got home and did nothing for the rest of the day but read, drink tea and watch the snow fall. I have had to rest more lately instead of just pushing through everything like I'm used to doing. It's frustrating but I do feel better when I listen to my body and slow down when needed.
This morning we had a late start at school to allow time for the roads to be plowed. So I got to sleep in a little and do a few chores before going to work.
Yay!
I feel rested and wish we had a late start every day! Today was a little strange since we all came in two hours later, but hey, the day went by fast! The sun came out and the snow is beautiful. And it's Friday!

My trip is in one week and today I began some packing. Don't laugh! Next week is going to be very hectic, I won't have much time and need to get a jump on it. Also, I really struggle when packing for trips and tend to overpack but I also hate bringing too much stuff. I can get by with very little if I plan, hence today's foray into packing.
Why did I not notice this earlier?????? Ok, I can still cram everything in it and use it for my piece of checked baggage and carry on my backpack. The problem is the winter gear like my parka and hiking boots. I do not want to wear my hiking boots on any flights, but they take up lots of room. And I'll have to shlep around hanging on to my parka too as I can't fit it in my baggage. It's like some evil puzzle! My suitcases are either too small or too large. You'd think with all of the international travelling I've done (lots) I'd get the hang of it by now. This process consumed waaaaaaaaaaayyyy too much time today but having done a preliminary pack I feel okay with what I came up with. The cats, though, are not okay as they've now seen the Dreaded Suitcases and know that the humans will be leaving soon.

After some wrangling, I got the generator going so we'd have heat. Then checked on my mom to help her get her little portable heater going. Even with the generator powering our liquid kerosene heater it was cold and I was very busy keeping things going.

I had a fairly productive day at work today. Still struggling with jet lag and general fatigue issues. When I came home I really just wanted to curl up in a ball and sleep but, as always, I feel better after my workout.

It took me a while to catch up on stuff while I was out of the country, plus I've had appointments, etc. I took a glorious hike last Saturday. I tore down an old, rotten trellis and installed new metal ones for my wisteria. In a couple of months I'll have a tunnel of purple wisteria blooms. Fatigue has been dogging me but I'm still pressing on!

Tough day at work and I'm very tired but pressing on as usual.
I had a lovely supper by lantern light. The power did come back on about 4 hours later, not a big deal. Such is life in the mountains. You can count on the power going out, your cell phone not working and sometimes needing a chainsaw to remove a fallen tree from the road. I like the challenges of living here, though sometimes it would be nice to be able to have a pizza delivered or not have to drive an hour to the nearest shopping. But then I remember what I felt like living in a congested city, fighting traffic, the noise, etc. and I'm happy to be where I am.
