MAY-JUNE 2026: Cimmerian

I think we've reached the point of sheer madness. This year's new workout is based around Conan the Barbarian, a sword & sorcery pulp fiction character created by Robert E Howard, later played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Momoa. In the stories, Conan is born on the battlefield in Cimmeria, a wild and harsh forested country surrounded by hardships that made his people strong warriors. After some time, he garners a strong sense of wanderlust that leads him to roaming the Hyborian continent and surviving on his instincts, his immense strength and indomitable spirit, and his skills with a sword. In adventures he became a reaver, a thief, a mercenary, a soldier, a pirate, a gladiator, and in time became a king by his own hand. Cut it however you want, he's a badass.

So in putting this together I try to blend training aspects of hypertrophy, strength and power, and metabolic overload with a dash of fight training. I reread some of his stories, studied both Arnold's and Momoa's training styles, even studied the training undergone by the cast of 300 and Spartacus, as well as the USMC. The result is a brutal 5 day routine centered around mostly compound lifts and utilizing progressive overload, eccentric overload, metabolic overload, super sets, AMRAPs, Effective Rep training, and circuits. If you'll notice, the full body day utilizes a variation of Darebee's own Conan routine, the same one I made into a running gag in the early days of the Hive and made everyone annoyed! If all goes well, I won't die from this, and if the powers that are @Damer and the team are kind, we'll walkaway with a Cimmerian Conan sword routine! (I'll even video myself performing it if you so wish). So let's crush our enemies, see them driven before us, and hear the lamentations of our sore muscles!

Oooo new workout soreness...you know I've done Darebee's sword workouts before, but with a bokken or a longsword, neither of which are notably heavy. But do them with a 9 lb body bar which is somewhat longer? Now that's some warrior training.

@Scorpion King I will DM you about the video. I kinda like the idea, mainly because every time I think of Cimmerian-inspired workouts what comes to mind is a one-word answer that, for a while, in the early days of The Hive, did -indeed- seem to be the answer to everything. :LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

You know, 31 year old me looks back at 19 year old me and cringes all the time but there is something nostalgic about blurting out CONAN for pretty much everything :tears:

When you and the team finally unleash the Cimmerian sword routine (hell you can call it that, there's no copyright on the word "Cimmerian"), I'd be honored to demonstrate it! Might even pull out the real sword because I lack a sense of danger!

Just in case anyone else is crazy enough to try this routine in its entirety, at least once a week, make sure you have a King's Feast. Not just a cheat meal, but something filling, hearty, and packed with protein, carb and more to put everything back together again.

Tonight, I made a Greek style pork stew with pork chops, bacon, black beans, onion, garlic, orzo, red wine, beef stock, tomato paste, dijon mustard, olive oil, thyme, paprika, oregano, tarragon, and salt & pepper. It was a feast fit for an Aquilonian king! 🥣🐽🥓🌰🍷🫘🌿🍅🍃🫒🍇

I woke up this morning feeling sore and tight in just about every muscle in my body, so I opted not to weight train in order to avoid injury. Instead I opted to train with weapons....that somehow seems safer.
Truth be told, I gotta get back into my martial arts roots and this was a good venture. Hey @Damer it's been some time since we had a bo staff routine, and we still haven't gotten an Escrima/Kali workout! Yeah, I'll be quiet now 😅
I will say? Going from using a 9 lb body bar for the sword workouts to a 2.5 lb longsword was a startling drop!

BO STAFF: 20 minutes of strike, block, and spin drills; work on the left
KATANA: Samurai workout
LONGSWORD: Sword-for-Hire workout
ESCRIMAS: 15 minutes of strike and block combos; need a solid revisit
ARCHERY: 1 hour of accuracy and consistency practice

Okay it's not as healthy as the Greek pork stew, but it definitely combined nutrient density with filling comfort. Though, I may make an effort to make sure each King's Feast I make myself!

It was quite phenomenal actually! Excellent portion size, well made and crafted, quite filling, and all made better by how speedy the cooks were and how pleasant the staff were!

Vegetable curry and jasmine rice are EXCELLENT, especially with a nice cup of green tea

Week 5's King's Feast: Seafood & hotroot soup; made with swai, shrimp, mussels, curry, chili, leeks, onion, garlic, potatoes, vegetable stock, milk, salt & pepper, with a side of French bread!

Interesting fact, this recipe comes from the book series "Redwall", if anybody remembers that. And you know what? After working yesterday 7 to 5, in the sun, lifting and hauling extremely heavy pieces, I think I've definitely earned a comfortable King's Feast this week!🥣🐟🍤🦪🧅🧄🌶🥔🍶🥖
