hi guys!

Started karate last week! 😁 Went 2 lessons so far. The senior taught me so many things that I could barely remember. Flexibility wasn't great so kicks were difficult and I had to work pretty hard. Quads and glutes got tired quickly.

We did bunch of lowerbody stretching including front splits and sitting side splits, also some strength training like squats and push ups.

We did push-ups on the fists! It was pretty cool and I did some this morning as well.

Started Flexibility challenge!
Day 1, 40 side lunges and 30 sec splits

10 push ups on the fist (6 on my knees and 4 by a furniture)

Hopefully I can build a morning routine habit, which doesn't have to be big but help me get up early.

Got my karate uniform today. Kicks feel so much more comfortable to do with the pants.😁

Flexibility day 2
Core challenge day one, fist push ups.
2 hours karate 😁

I got cramped every time I went to karate at about 1.5hr of the practice... the index, middle toes, and the foot arch. Not sure why, but definitely need more flexibility at the lower limbs. Can't straighten my knees during the kicks.

Morning Mobility workout
Flexibility, day 3
Core challenge day 2, 6 classic fist push ups! and 4 knee push ups on palms.

I did 3 consecutive classic push ups on my fists! 😁😁😁 low enough by the regular push up standard, too.

It's a bit too much for my knuckles though, especially after all the punches yesterday. Now I can't do this every day, so will go slow with the core challenge.

8 fist push up on knees at home

I realized that the fist push ups I did at home were much harder on my bones than those that I did at the dojo, because at home I was doing it upon a thin yoga mat so the surface was harder than the dojo. I got some pain at the back of my hands already after a few knee push ups upon the yoga mat, so probably no full fist push ups at home for now.

or do it against the sofa, softer than the mat.

2 hour karate, super tired😑
Today the training was more formal, but it's too advanced for me, especially the kicks.

Had difficultly standing single leg, couldn't straighten my knees if not kicking super low, had a hard time throbbing forward, etc. When I tried to do the side kicks as instructed I had to go super slow and my waist pretty tight, otherwise I couldn't even stand...

All the kicks were like a difficultly 5 motion and I was at difficultly 1... I felt like my lower back was trying to compensate all the time and got super tired and probably strained... My legs just didn't have the flexibility and strength to do a proper kick...

The instructor made it sounds like it should be easy and I was like an idiot or something... Not everyone understood how hard it could be for certain people.

Your body has to get used to movements it's not familiar with, it just takes a little time. ;)

I'm sorry your instructor made you feel that way! I have a background in martial arts (from years ago... but who's counting?) and I can tell you it's totally normal for some people to have a harder time, especially at the start. Just stick with it and do what you can and before you know it the exercises that used to give you grief will come easy and painless. :) You're doing great, don't let them discourage you or make you feel bad! (easier said than done, I know) You've got this! :staystrong:

@astro_lizard Yeah It's weird... You wouldn't expect a black belt to make you feel that way. He probably thought a bit too highly of me.

I am okay, but it's a bit like I don't want this guy to lead the session... There were two other black belts who went pretty soft when it came to the kicks. They made the sessions more like an fun exercise time, but still trains your muscles and certain skills. Right now this method feels more comfortable and fun, too.

Of course you still need to put in the work if you want to improve. I am not against learning the basics at all. I just don't want it to be too advanced and then they made it looks like you are an idiot for not able to do the motion...

2 hours karate

Yet another instrutor leading the section, also formal stuff but made much more sense in terms of the difficulties. 🤣 There were bunch of kids and teens. Kicks were much more manageable. Basics for an hour, then some kata, and sparring.

I still missed the first couple lessons by the other two instructors though. Now I can tell those were probably not typical karate sessions, but pretty fun. 😁

Hi everyone,

I am reestablishing this thread because my old account seems to be deleted...

Those who know me know I have an alcohol addiction, and honestly I relapsed. The withdrawal has become worse, and the dynamics between drinking and trying not to drink has become more dramatic.

I reached out to a treatment center under my friend's influence. Not sure how things will go, though.

I worked out today, mostly stretching and walking. I was tired all the time and my attention span was low. My cardiovascular was weakee than ever. When I try to stay sharp and concentrating it doesn't last very long.

I will keep things updated. One thing I would really like to achieve is the 5k, and than under 25mins. Another thing is those really cool movements like pull up, hand stand, planche, L sit, etc.
I had a relapse too and blacked out around day 2 after stopping. Light work only helped: short walks, gentle mobility, and easy spins while keeping HR low, intensity made dizziness worse, plus electrolytes and small bland meals were steadier than forcing it.

For pull ups, focus on scapular pulls, ring rows, and box assisted negatives, once I built a 10–20s flex hang, my first rep followed. When it felt risky, I visited Abbeycare for a quick assessment and advice on supervised detox and aftercare. Having regulated staff walk me through options cut the fear a lot.
