Now, I'm not doing the Watch again tonight because something happened as I was wrapping up my notes for today's D&D session: there was an accident right near my house. A drunk driver flipped their truck sideways on a sidewalk, and while we waited for the emergency, many families went outside to check what was going on. Thankfully, no one was hurt. The driver, aside from a few bruises and scratches, was fine. We managed to push the truck back on its wheels before the police came to tow the truck and do their investigation. Someone's license is getting suspended, for sure, but it could have been much worse. On the other side, I'm just glad that we all came to help. I mean, a teen who is very nimble climbed the truck and was about to take the driver out by himself if it wasn't by the fact that the driver was actually fine. Conscious, and standing. They didn't seem drunk, but the smell of their breath and the way their eyes looked said a different story. I saw the police doing him the tests; you know, walk the line, breathe here...
What happens next, I won't know. What will happen next in our D&D campaign though will develop once our GM relaxes. He is starting a big semester in university this time, so it is now my turn for GMing. I told the group that I'm rebooting the campaign because I bloated it so badly that I couldn't cut anything out because I didn't know where to start. Nevertheless, I introduced some Ironsworn mechanics briefly, and I will have them keep track of things like vows and stuff. I will put a limit to those, and keep them related to the active threads that go on. I also introduced the Scale of Trouble and Grace from Tourniquet, the VtM solo engine, which will replace Momentum, but this will be limited to a +6. Why a +6? Because ICRPG's Battlefury Die is a D6, and this works similar. This will help me get rid of the reminder for Battlefury, plus I can reward Momentum for minor successes that seem to tip the balance in favor of the players, but also penalize players. Ironsworn already has rules on giving and taking Momentum inscribed in its moves.
Mechanic-wise, everything is done. Now, all that remains is to start the story again. This time, I will go small, and keep it as small as possible. I bought myself a notebook, so that way I am restrained to the amount of space that I can have in that notebook alone. No more bloating. Even if it is a city campaign, this is a theme park, not an entire world to explore, and you can only ride many rides on a theme park.
As for the other campaign, well, our characters faced a huge defeat, and we had a guest appearance of a character that died in our first campaign, thanks to the Horn of Valhalla. This was established during the final sessions of that campaign, where I allowed for one especific berserker to be the Fighter who died in that campaign to be summoned due to the sounding of the Horn. Since then it became something flavorful to add to anyone who has the Horn of Valhalla: the chance of summoning one dead character for help, like in Skyrim, which allows you to summon Lucien once you advance in the Dark Brotherhood long enough. No mechanics changed; it's just nice flavor, and a chance to have our beloved characters back on the fray. There was also reveal and confirmation about my character's backstory, since she's the only one who hasn't her backstory fully developed yet. As I teased everyone, she will die at the end. Is not werid from me, honestly. I do like to have my D&D characters to die at the end of the campaign. Besides, she probably won't be truly dead, but actually reach her one true goal, and I want to see this develop because it will change the world for good, and it will have an impact in campaigns that happen after this event.
Is not like I will miss that character though. While, yeah, I will miss playing as her with my friends, I can actually develop her story on my own terms in a different setting that suits her storyline better... one new setting where I will be free from the constraints I put in this one, and her story will pretty much kickstart the entire showdown that happens in that setting itself. That is something I will play in my own, one day...
