Just finished Bookshops and Bonedust and I'm starting up Legends and Lattes. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and am excited to continue the story.

I too loved them both! Though I felt like Bookshops and Bonedust was a little more actiony than Legends and Lattes. (There's still some action in it though!)

I've started Plays Well with Others by Eric Barker, and I'm still reading few books that haven't been translated to English yet (Szwaja's Matka wszystkich lalek and rereading Asioita jotka saavat sydämen lyömään nopeammin by Mia Kankimäki)

I've finished Sapkowski's Sezon Burz (Season of Storms) and Hobb's Royal Assassin.
After fantasy I'm craving for some crime... :chuckle:

Last night I ended up reading a graphic novel called Bowling with Corpses and Other Strange Tales from Lands Unknown. It's by the creator of Hellboy (though it's not in the same universe). It's an anthology of short stories in a fantasy land, many of which are loosely based off folklore. But what made it interesting is that each story builds off the other to create a history and full creation myth of this fantasy world. Pretty interesting format, with some of the Hellboy style of humor in it.

When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi.

Scalzi is not my favorite writer; but he is good for a fast, fun read with sassy characters. His last three books have mostly been about putting just some dude in ridiculous sci-fi situations (kaiju conservation, inheriting a super villain's organization, and the moon turning to cheese), and I've enjoyed all three. This one plays around with multiple points of view (multiple characters, news releases, interviews, transcripts, etc.), and it's been quite entertaining.

I just finished "The Final Empire", the first in the Mistborn series. It was really good but I feel the story is fine as it is, no need to read the following 5.

I have the rather long (600+ pages) For Whom the Belle Tolls as my audio book on my commute, I'm over half way done and quite enjoying it. I follow the author on TikTok and enjoyed the series she's done that this book is based on. So far I'm quite enjoying it, but it is of the spicy variety if that's not your jam, so reader beware.

Over the weekend I needed some comfort reading so I blasted through my favourite book of all time The Blue Castle and it still remains top of my list. Just, one of those nice books you can relax with and sink right into.

I just finished Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. I came across it in the bookshop, where they had this beautiful clothbound book. I didn't even know the movie was based on a book. I loved it, I think it's pretty modern for a 1877 novel.
Now I'm going to watch the movie again 😁

Reading American Cult: A Graphic History of Religious Cults in America from the Colonial to Today. And before anyone asks, it was published in 2021.

It's a 190 page anthrology with each story (I think there's 18) talking about a different cult from different authors and artists. I love that at the very beginning, they lay out four guidelines for what they are considering a cult for this. It's truly a fascinating read. Some I haven't heard of before. And for some, I have heard but didn't know all the details and history. I will warn that there are some adult scenes in it, though, as sex is a part of many of the cults. But it's not erotic in nature. But does a good job of not only talking about the cults but also talking about why people get into them in the first place.

I am reading “El desafío del agua”, a political essay that talks about the appropriation and privatization of water and the impact it has on citizens and nature, especially in the global south.

Are you a mood reader? I have a few books in progress. I recently finished the 8th book in the Bridgerton series, and Book 1 in the Murderbot series. (both the book AND the series were great!)

Ongoing:
My Life with the Eskimos by Vilhjalmur Stefansson - an incredible account of a man who spent years exploring the arctic and lived for years with the Eskimos
Chemins de ce Temps-Là by Daniel Meurois & Anne Givaudan - stories of a few of Jeshua's followers who landed in France after the crucifixion, encounters with the gauls and druids...
Gnosis by Boris Mouravieff - a study and comments on esoteric orthodox orientalism
Letting Go by David Hawkins - one of the best book explaining why we get "stuck" on emotional issues and how to let go :)

I did a one day DIY reading retreat yesterday! It was so relaxing and fun; I really want to start doing one or two a month. The books I read:

The Book of Alchemy: A Creative Practice for an Inspired Life by Suleika Jaouad. It's about journaling! It combines a lot of different people's thoughts on journaling with journal prompts, and it was really intriguing.

Micro Activism: How You Can Make a Difference in the World without a Bullhorn by Omkari Williams. Some really good advice and really good resources about activism and how to stay involved long term without getting burned out.

Devotions: The Selected Poems of Mary Oliver by Mary Oliver. Poetry's not my usual thing, but I do like Oliver's use of the natural world in her work.

Unico: Awakening by Samuel Sattin, Gurihiru, and Osamu Tezuka. A cute (and pretty!) manga I impulse-bought a few months ago because I thought the design of the main character was so odd :tears:. Now I want to read the manga that inspired it!

Skyborn: Phoenix Flight by Jessica Khoury. The final in the series! It's a fun middle grade story with some great worldbuilding - simple enough not to overshadow the plot, but still involved enough to be interesting and enhance the vibes of the book.

Oh, and I listened to The Shepherd's Crown by Terry Pratchett, narrated by Indira Varma et al., during my eye rest/exercise breaks. I love how Varma portrays the all the witches, but especially Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg.

Oh, that reading retreat sounds so fun and relaxing! As someone who enjoys parallel play with my crew, that sounds so nice.

Spooky season reading: Sunshine by Robin McKinley. One of my favorite vampire books!

Non-fiction: You are a Miracle (And a Pain in the Ass) by Mike McHargue. Podcasters have, shall we say, unique takes on subjects, in my experience; and this has been an interesting, fast read. Lots of psychology described by a layperson, and a lot of autobiographical stories. I'm enjoying it!

Spooky season reading: The Snow Woman and Other Yokai Stories From Japan by Noboru Wada, translated by William Scott Wilson. This is one of my souvenirs from the Japanese pop culture con I went to on Saturday. I'm enjoying hearing a bunch of new (to me) spooky stories. :ghost:

Re-reading: Delicious in Dungeon by Ryoko Kui. I'm finally feeling up to cooking again, and I made some snacks the other day that reminded me of a dish in this series. Naturally, I just had to read it again! :tears::seeds:

@NightWolf714 It is SO good! I love how much thought was put into the ecosystem of the dungeon. And I would love to have a cookbook based on the series :noming:
My partner and I watched the Dungeon Meshi anime adaptation and we loved it so much! I need to check out the manga

@AquaMarie - Apparently she puts a ton of work into all the parts of the story. I saw a chart she made where you could identify each of the characters just based off their noses or eyes. There's so much heart and soul into this series.

@astro_lizard - You should!!! The storyline just gets crazier, while still keeping to the core themes and such.

Been reading Trading Places by Emily Duvall. It's definitely junk food of books, lightly spicy romance. But that's a nice break sometimes. :)

I recently read a graphic novel I was recommended called Ever After by Olivia Vieweg. It's a zombie apocalypse story. Not as gory, per say, but kinda raw and artsy. The artwork is absolutely beautiful in it. A bit different story for that kinda thing than I'm use to seeing, I think. Fairly short read so I'd recommend it.

Thinking about picking up a collection of Ray Bradbury short stories to read soon. I've heard him mentioned lately a few times. I've read a lot of his shorter stuff when I was a kid. He's one of my sister's favorite authors. But that was decades ago and I don't remember them that well, so giving them another read sometime.

Non-fiction: How to Be a Victorian by Ruth Goodman. Really interesting book! I was impressed with how easy to read it was, and I loved her comments on the items and techniques she had actually tried. I want to read How To Be a Tudor next.

Spooky season reading: The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher. I love anything T. Kingfisher writes, basically. She's so good at character and setting. This is one of the few horror books I actually own, because I am a weenie when it comes to horror books. :shiver:
