To build abs it is best to combine dynamic exercises with planks.
The two types of exercises strengthen each other and you get results faster than using only one of the two types of exercises.
The plank is used to tire the muscle and the dynamic exercise to make it work, in this way instead of doing dozens of repetitions of dynamic exercises you do much less alternating them with planks in less time and making more effort :)

To expand on what @Fremen said about dynamic exercises, there are dynamic versions of planks, if planking is really the only thing you want to do (no faulting that, I love planks!). You can do plank crunches, thread the needle side planks, plank jump-ins, plank jacks, commando planks, and other variations, and then do your static holds with hand planks, elbow planks, side planks, star planks, etc.
