April 15-21: Another weekly roundup post.
Stats for the Week:
hiking: 77.5 km
French: 7 hours French-language television
Still slacking on the workout front. I did do some dancing. But not enough to count for a half hour workout on any given day. I also did more hiking, thanks in part to nicer weather. (And picked up a tick for my efforts. Yuck! But thankfully only an American Dog Tick. And weirdly an adult male. Which would explain why I found it on the outside of my sweater, not latched onto my skin. In any case, I stripped down and did a full body search of myself and of Shelby, and inspected my clothing with reading glasses on after that discovery!)
I'm not really sure why I've not been working out more. Part of it is just running out of time. (Due to having a lot of other things on my plate right now but also due to procrastination/bad scheduling on my part.)
I almost always hike to the grocery store now--preparing for the time coming soon when I will once again be carless. So at least I am getting some exercise that way. And then I feel bad about leaving Shelby again to go for a run. She's lost a lot of people in the last eighteen months. First Trudy. Then my father. And now my mother. (Who's still alive. But Shelby doesn't know that. All she knows is that my mother got carted out of here unconscious and on a stretcher four months ago--the same way my father left and never again returned back in September.) Now she follows me around even within the house. Sometimes she even follows me within our own room, when I move between the bed and my desk. So I feel bad about leaving her behind. Hence both the extra hiking and the lack of running. I'm hoping this will change once we have moved and have more housemates to help keep Shelby company. But for now, we're kind of both just hanging in there. Plus: walking with Shelby is the most relaxing/least mentally-taxing form of physical exercise.
My French study continues to be primarily watching French language television programming. Which again is the least mentally-taxing thing I can do on that front. But it does help--particularly with my ability to understand spoken French. Which is my weakest French skill. So I'm okay with this for now.

Actually a slight improvement over the previous week. Which surprised me. I was more productive overall this week than the previous, but mostly with cooking and administrative stuff (dealing with my parents' 2023 income taxes). Then on Thursday I finally received some board games I had purchased through a Kickstarter last July.
These are big, beautiful, crunchy Euro games with huge table footprints I have been looking forward to receiving for a long time. And now they've finally arrived just in time to be boxed up with all the rest of my worldly possessions and packed away in a storage locker for an indeterminate amount of time, because I'll soon be couch-surfing.
Just look at this beauty:
It's so pretty. And so, so, big! Even if I keep it near the front of the storage locker, where I'll be able to access it from time to time, I don't know if the table in the house I'll be staying in is large enough to support such a huge game. (And in any case, that table is always cluttered. Shelby and I will be living in a very full house where nobody has very much space.)
I did not want to have to pack these games away without playing them at least once. I do have a lot of space at the moment. But I don't have anyone near me to play the games with. And am unlikely to be hosting any guests over the next couple of months except for friends who are helping me move. Anyhow... I decided to at least set the one game up to see just how large its footprint is. (I had to stand on a chair and push the dining room chandelier out of the way to get my wide-angle-lens camera high enough above the table to take the above shot. It's a big game!)
Then I thought: well, the game is all set up. I might as well play it. One round at a time, as I have time, had been my initial idea. But then I sort of got into it on Saturday and played through the entire game. Which took a LONG time.
This is a long game in general. When set up for four players (because I haven't yet learned the rules for solo or even 2 or 3 player games) but I'm playing all of the colours myself, it takes even longer. (In a multi-player game one can always plan for their turn while other players are taking theirs. Plus this game includes some end-of-turn steps that can be carried out while the game has already moved on to the next player. Playing four societies solo however, I could not do any of this.)
I ended up staying up Saturday night until 5:30 AM Sunday morning to finish the game. Which then of course meant I got a late start on Sunday. And had a nap Sunday evening. I got started on my story for the week way late in the day on Sunday. Probably later than I have started in any other week thus far. So I guess it's a good thing that I still finished the story on time. Finished it with over 2 hours to spare, in fact.
Getting faster at writing is one of the things I am working on this year and is one of the reasons I decided to do the story-a-week challenge. My performance this week was definitely good in this regard. On the other hand: getting even better at procrastinating is not exactly a goal of mine.
But hey: I did get my story written. And the accountant has all the documents she needs to prepare my parents' income tax returns. Plus I made some delicious and nutritious food. And I enjoyed a fun game of Inventions: Evolution of Ideas. (Now I just need to find myself some friends in the community I'm moving into who enjoy cruncy Euro games and have really big tables!)
